THE WESTERNMOST FIRE Island community of Kismet was founded in 1925. The Kismet Inn followed, along with building the marina and first walkways. Time and history resonates from the wainscot walls. It’s still standing after harsh winters and summer storms. A huge part of this legacy is to the credit of Larry Cole and his family.
The Kismet Inn may be one of the oldest restaurants on Fire Island, but the food is definitely not behind the times. Whether you want to stop in at the bar for a refreshing drink or sit down for a four-course meal, the Kismet Inn will satisfy you. With beers like Stella and Blue Point on tap, as well as blender drinks like Rocket Fuels, you are guaranteed to find a refreshing drink to quench your thirst after a long beach day.
If you want to make those drinks and the family oriented atmosphere last a little longer, just step outside on the front deck with a view of the marina for some fine dining.
Upon opening the menu you will find a variety of entrees, both by land and sea. We chose the sea, and went for the baked clams. Kismet Inn’s fabled baked clams are a popular item on the menu, and it’s easy to understand why. We ordered the clams casino – clams topped with bacon, and who doesn’t like bacon?
After careful consideration of the entrees menu, we chose to stay with the seafood options, I mean, come on – we are on Fire Island. The Inn offers weekly specials that utilize fresh fish locally caught from nearby waters.
We enjoyed the linguini with white clam sauce. Then we tried the seafood medley consisting of fresh sole, shrimp, clams, and scallops. However it was the shrimp scampi that took us over the moon. Shrimp and garlic – a match made in heaven!
After all this seafood and garlic we needed something sweet (besides the Rocket Fuel that is.) Choosing which dessert was not easy, but upon recommendation from our waiter Shane we agreed to split the triple chocolate cake. He was right. This cake may not have helped our bikini bodies, but man did it taste good.
The Kismet Inn is definitely worth a try, not only for the great food but for the rich history that it holds.
Kismet Inn will remain open daily though the month of September, then weekends only until the first weekend November.
