By Donnie DeSanti ~ Comedian and podcast host Joe Rogan once said, “It’s a very strange thing when you make nature illegal.” This couldn’t be truer than what happened this past week in New York City. A report put out by the NYC Health Department stated that all restaurants shall be prohibited from adding CBD to any of their food or beverage selection effective July 1, 2019. CBD has taken the world by storm lately, being added to everything from coffee, to hamburgers, and even cocktails. The Department of Health feels they do not know enough about the safety of CBD to allow establishments to serve it. Restaurants violating this new mandate risk a $250 to $500 fine. This is a big loss for some owners who have invested a lot on the CBD boom.
What is CBD Oil?
CBD stands for cannabidiol and is one of the hundreds of cannabinoids present in the cannabis plant. The more popular cannabinoid has always been its better known counterpart THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), the compound responsible for getting a person high when consumed.
Why the CBD Buzz?
Recently more research is showing that many of the cannabinoids, such as CBD, have many health benefits such as reducing pain, controlling anxiety, improving sleep, and reducing symptoms associated with chronic disease. But the real beauty in all this is that not only does it help in so many ways, it has nearly zero side effects! Considering 130 people die a day from opioid overdose according to the CDC website, such a breakthrough could be a game changer. This could mean a huge shift in the current health of our country with the help of this plant.
Of course, anyone new to CBD oil first thinks, “Will I get high using CBD oil?” No, it’s actually impossible as CBD works with a completely different part of the body through what is called the endocannabinoid system (ECS). Our body actually needs these cannabinoids like CBD to thrive.
Am I saying our bodies need to smoke pot? Not quite the same subject – our body naturally produces what is called endogenous cannabinoids. There is actually cannabinoids found in breast milk that help a baby through the development stages. More research is showing that many of our ailments could be stemming from a deficiency in proper cannabinoids in our body. This is why so many people are experiencing such amazing results while using something like CBD because their body is filling this deficiency role.
The good news is CBD oil is legal in all 50 states under the Farm Bill Act and can be purchased online or at a local health food store. The irony in the banning of CBD in New York City is the Department of Health is saying they are uncertain about safety in CBD oil, yet a person can drink up at a local New York City bar, then top it off with an artery-hardening double bacon cheeseburger. Sure, nothing unhealthy about that!
Hopefully, the Department of Health will use the interim time before July 1 to do some more research. It’s a waste of time and resources to ban something that is safer than many of the products on a restaurant’s menu. However I have a hunch that common sense will not prevail here. Someday we will look back and laugh at how much energy was wasted in fighting over a plant. The good news is we can still purchase CBD as we choose in other retail venues.
Food for thought!
